John Jacobs doesn't mind following a tough act.
After Cole Hermanson fired up the crowd with a great bull ride, Jacobs followed suit with an even better one.
Jacobs' score of 79 won the PRCAchampionship, while his good friend Hermanson was second best on Saturday with a 76.
"Whenever that happens right before you ride, it pumps you up - especially when it's your buddy,"Jacobs said. "I just wanted to come back with another good ride."
Jacobs was riding a bull callled Rusty Rivets. The bull kicked high out of the chute, took a dip left, and then started spinning until the buzzer sounded.
The Sturgis, S.D., cowboy faltered just a bit, but not enough to look like he lost much control.
"That was a good bull, and I knew he was going to have a lot of hop,"Jacobs said. "I got tipped a little bit, but made some good moves. That was a good ride."
Hermanson, who hails from Mandan, also had a spinner on his hands in Peace Maker.
The bull started twirling immediately out of the chute, but Hermanson didn't miss a beat. His score tied him for second.
"You're always rooting for your friends, and you like to see them get a good ride,"Jacobs said. "You like making a good ride even better, but it was good to see that for both of us."
There were also two pretty soild rides in he bareback riding - but both of those came from the same rider.
Dan Miller of Raleigh had a wild first ride on a horse called Roughrider that started with three high bucks, and then a slip that caused the horse to land on its side.
The horse hopped back up and started bucking again - and Miller stayed on until the buzzer sounded. Miller was awarded another ride.
"That was a young horse, and that happens sometimes where they'll fall down,"Miller said. "I was going pretty good, but I got the reride and that worked out, too."
Miller's second ride earned him a score of 77, which was tops for the night and second on the weekend. On Friday, Richardton's Zane Forster rode for a 78.
"I was just trying to make as good of a ride as I could," Miller said. "I lost control a little bit at the end, and I think that cost me.
"It was still a good ride, but I think I could've won the rodeo if I would've been in control just a little bit more there at the end."
Jacobs' mark in the bull riding was one of three on the night that bested marks from Friday.
Jay Mattson of Deadwood, S.D., and Paul Griemsan from PIedmont, S.D., paired up to win the team roping with a mark of 5.2 seconds.
