10 years ago (1999): The Western Division American Legion baseball tournament got off to a wild start.

Sixth-seeded Dickinson scored three runs on wild pitches, and took advantage of dropped fly balls to upset third-seeded Minot 6-1 in the tournament opener.

Williston advanced in the winners' bracket by beating Devils Lake 13-3 in six innings.

For the Roughriders, Josh Erickson threw a complete-game three-hitter, allowing one earned run with five strikeouts and no walks. Nate Burgard scored two runs and Pat Kallenback collected two runs batted in.

"If we have to take the hard road, then we'll take it," Dickinson coach Pete Leno said.

For the Keybirds, Matt Gendreau threw a complete game for the victory with nine strikeouts, while Rick Waitman was 2-for-5 with two runs at the plate. Ryan Kolle knocked in three runs and Tony Schmidt went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Brent Spooner finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Steve Peterson was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs, while Kacy Karl was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

20 years ago (1989): WILLISTON - The championship of the Western Division American Legion baseball tournament was decided. But don't close the book on the Bismarck-Williston series. There may be more to come.

In that respect, Bismarck coach Wayne Horner looked at Williston's 15-11 victory as another learning experience. And the Governors have rarely made the same mistake twice.

Steve Monger was the winner in relief for the Keybirds, while J.T. Noehre was the loser in relief for the Governors.

For Williston at the plate, Brooks Hornstein had three hits and Chad Rodvold hit a two-run triple, while Kelly Heller finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

For Bismarck at the plate, Travis Wyckoff went 2-for-5 with a double, while Jeff Schulz hit a double and tallied three runs batted in. Chad Spotts finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, while Greg Giedd contributed two hits.

"We looked at this game as a momentum builder," Williston coach Kris Kuester said.

50 years ago (1959): Mandan's American Legion Junior baseball team shrugged off a determined last-ditch rally by Dickinson to capture a narrow 3-2 victory and the fourth berth in the Legion's Western Division tournament.

Mandan's Mike Klug went all the way for the win, striking out six and walking four.

Dave Schwindt started for Dickinson and took the loss. Dennis Hawn was the relief man.

Jake Gronvold, Don Hertz and Ken Ciavarella all had hits for Mandan. Al Fitterer, Leon House and Ted Loran scored runs.

Ken Keller scored twice for Dickinson, while Dick Haug had a run-scoring triple.
