10 years ago (1997):Oddsmakers would have a difficult time handicapping the West Region sprinters when they line up for the 100 meters.
Mandan's Crystal Engstrom is the defending state champion, surprising some with her victory last spring in Grand Forks.
"Last year it was close all season, but she hadn't beaten any of the other good sprinters until the state meet," Mandan coach Mike Kuhn said. "That's what happened … on that day SHE won."
It happened again in the Bismarck-Century Invitational girls track and field meet at Faris Field in Mandan. Engstrom finished first, followed by Century's Kristen Bachmeier and Minot's Lacy Hinzpeter.
"Those are some great sprinters," Kuhn said, "and any one can win on any day."
Hinzpeter didn't go home without showing her mettle. She won the 200 (25.81 seconds), long jump (17-feet, 41/2 inches and helped the 800 relay to victory as a substitute.
"I usually run the 400," she said.
Hinzpeter helped Minot take the team title with ease. Coach Glee Mayer's Majettes totaled 194 points and Century was second with 137 in the seven-team field. Mandan was third with 96 points, followed by Bismarck with 61, St. Mary's 35, Center 11 and Dickinson 10.
20 years ago (1987): Erin Anders was 15 when he ran away from home
Well, he didn't exactly run away. Actually, his parents gave him a ride to a small Canadian town about 350 miles from Bismarck and dropped him off.
Anders, you see, has a dream to make a name for himself in the sport of hockey. He is a goalie. A good goalie, But good goalies don't become great playing 20 games a year in North Dakota.
So, in the fall of 1985, Anders left his friends at Century and his family at home and enrolled at Notre Dame, a private Catholic high school in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. Population: 100. That's without the school.
In theory, the school provides the best of both worlds. Hockey practice on the biggest indoor ice sheet (205 x 100 feet) in North American and an academic program respected throughout Canada.
Anders says most players hit the books harder than their slapshots. Even though the team played 71 games, Anders says there were always mandatory study periods when the players were on the road. Anders had already been accepted into college by Denver, Minnesota and Western Michigan.
"There were so many times I was writing essays late at night on the bus, Anders says.
50 years ago (1957): Mike Perez, who caught for most of the Bismarck Barons' 1956 season, is being wooed by local officials for a return to the Man-Dak League baseball wars.
The club has written to the Cuban backstop to learn his status and is awaiting his reply.
Officials also have several other catching prospects in mind as plans move ahead quickly after the naming of veteran Bill Hockenbury as manager for the '57 campaign.
Among other leading contenders for the catching spot are:
Isaac Seoane, a 29-year-old Cuban with 10 years experience. Last season with the Hobbs, Tex., of the Class B Southwestern League, he hit .285 in 118 games and rapped 11 homers and 71 RBIs. His fielding mark of .991 was second in the circuit.
Dayton Todd of Columbus, Ohio, currently attending college, has three full seasons in the Cleveland Indian farm system.
Fred Baker of Jacksonville, Fla., is a 6-foot, 19-year-old 205-pounder., who has played with the Negro Kansas City Monarchs and the Florida Cubans.
Gale Tuggle of Tallahassee, Fla., is a catcher-outfielder who bats left-handed. The 23-year-old is 5-7 and 165 pounds. He is attending Florida State, which is coached by Danny Litwhiler, the former major leaguer who once managed the F-M Twins.
