10 years ago (1998):JohnStorsved and Mike Klug each contributed a home run and two RBIs as the Mandan A's kicked off the BismarckClass BClassic Tournament with a 12-3 win over the Bismarck Royals.
Mandan an Velva, a 12-2 winner over Hazen, both went 1-0 inWhite Pool play. If the A's can get by Hazen and Velva, they can secure a spot in the championship game.
In the Red Pool, the Minot Metros outslugged Sawyer-Surrey 15-13 in a rematch of last year's title game. Sawyer-Surrey rebounded with a 13-9 victory over the Grand Forks Blues.
Minot finished the day 1-0. Sawyer-Surrey was 1-1.
20 years ago (1988): Mandan stumbled through a brutal seven-error performance behind pitcher kurt Miller as the Chiefs bowed 10-3 to Sturgis, S.D., to finish seventh in the Dickinson Legion tournament.
Dickinson finished third with a 7-1 victory over Williston. The Rapid City Bullets won the tourney.
Mandan rapped out eight hits to match Sturgis' total and Miller allowed just three walks. The errors, quite simply, were the difference, according to Chiefs coach JimKoch.
"Two of those errors were double play balls,"Koch noted. "We're out of the inning twice."
Elsewhere, Bismarck struggled through a doubleheader with Jamestown. The pitching-short Governors fell 16-10 and 16-6 to the visiting Jamestown squad.
Bismarck coach Wayne Horner went through five pitchers trying to stem the tide against Jamestown. Jamestown pounded out 31 hits in the doubleheader, including eight by Deron Dunkley.
Jeff Schulz connected for a home run in the first game for the Governors, now 10-4.
50 years ago (1958): Eau Claire's Tony Cloninger made his first pro pitching start a success and Chico Perez chipped in two home runs as the Braves whipped Grand Forks 11-3 in the Northern League.
Cloninger spaced his safeties after allowing the Chiefs their three runs, two in the second inning and one in the third. One of Perez's roundtrippers was a grand slam affair.
Loop leader Winnipeg increased its cushion to four games over Fargo-Moorhead by edging Duluth-Superior 5-3. St. Cloud beat Fargo-Moorhead 5-3 and underdog Aberdeen clipped Minot 7-1.
Aberdeen's victory was just its seventh in 42 league outings.
