Conrad Schwarzkopf has always looked to teammate Ryan Meidinger for help in the shot put.
The student surpassed the teacher on Saturday at the MAR Club boys track and field meet.
Schwarzkopf, a freshman, defeated Meidinger, a junior, for the first time in a meet. Schwarzkopf recorded a first-place mark of 49-6, and Meidinger was the runner-up with a put of 49-4½ at the Mandan High School track. Both were Class A state-qualifying throws.
"Ryan has been a big help for me,"Schwarzkopf said. "He takes me aside and shows me things. This is the first time I have beaten him, but it's been an inches battle."
Schwarzkopf and Meidinger helped Century finish second with 161½ points. Dickinson was first (217½).
Schwarzkopf had some problems advancing into the shot put finals because he kept scratching by hitting the toe board.
He turned to Meidinger for help during the finals and recorded his winning mark on his final throw.
"I thought it went 47 feet," Schwarzkopf said. "I didn't think it went 49."
Schwarzkopf met state- qualifying standards in his first competition of the season at Sidney, Mont. He reached qualifying standards again last week in Minot and has been striving to stay steady.
"I've been trying to stay consistent at 49 feet,"he said. "I'm trying to break 50 feet. I've been really close. I've come within 6 inches. I'd like to break 50 and place in the top six at state."
Schwarzkopf has another claim to fame aside from track and field. He is a distant cousin to Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., a retired United States Army General who was commander of the United States' Coalition Forces in the Gulf War of 1991.
"I get asked about it mostly on the first day of school,"Schwarzkopf said. "It's pretty cool, but I've never met him."
Joash Osoro of St. Mary's was named the MAR Club athlete of the meet.
Osoro won the 3,200-meter run and shattered a 30-year-old meet record. The senior finished the race in a sizzling state-qualifying time of 9:20.84. The old record of 9:27.50 was set by Tim Wheeler of Dickinson in 1979.
Osoro finished 44 seconds ahead of runner-up Josh Nuss of Bismarck.
Dickinson picked up five firsts to win the meet. Individual winners for the Midgets were Calen Beaudoin in the 400 (52.64), Clark Weiser in the 300 hurdles (41.54), Justin Dvorak in the javelin (152-10) and Bryce Leverson in the pole vault (14-0). Weiser and Leverson both met qualifying standards.
Dickinson's 400 relay team won in a state-qualifying time of 44.74.
The Midgets scored big in the pole vault, placing four vaulters for 24 points.
