10 years ago (1999): GRAND FORKS - The tortoise and the hare. The ant and the grasshopper. The little engine that could.
Pick your favorite childhood fable and chances are its moral applied to the West's workmanlike 20-14 victory over the East today in the Shrine Bowl's 11-man all-star football game.
The West was content to grind out three methodical scoring drives that all took at least 10 plays, all took at least 4:49 and all ended with Jim Miller barreling into the end zone.
The West's offensive line, including Mandan center Mike Duerre, helped the West pile up 307 yards rushing, 219 in the first half.
20 years ago (1989): The announcement probably didn't catch anyone by surprise. After all, Jim McPherson is no stranger to basketball in the Western Dakota Association.
But it's back to coaching basketball - after an eight-year retirement - for McPherson, this time at Mandan High School.
McPherson was named the boys basketball head coach by Pius Lacher, the MHS superintendent.
McPherson replaces Darryl Anderson, who resigned after coaching the Braves for two seasons. Anderson will stay at Mandan as the school's activities director.
50 years ago (1959): A power-laden crew of Bismarckers manhandled a good, but error-ridden Velva Independent nine, 14-3 at Municipal Ballpark. The win makes the Big Boy 5-0 on the season.
Rod Tjaden, Bill Leifur, Rich Olthoff and Dave Hummel, a foursome of ex-Junior Legion buddies, furnished the fireworks for the Bismarck Amateur booster crowd.
