So, Dre Brunskill can crush a slowpitch softball too.
Brunskill has left her mark in the Northern Sun as a cleanup hitter and catcher for the University of Mary. Brunskill, who will be a senior this coming school year, has been an all-conference first-team selection in the NSIC for the past two years.
Brunskill shined on a different stage this weekend, helping Bismarck Moritz Sport and Marine to its second straight Class C title at the McQuade Softball Tournament. Bismarck Moritz defeated Winnipeg Manitoba Blaze 14-4 in five innings on Sunday at the Clem Kelley diamonds.
Brunskill led off the fifth with a solo shot to left field to help Bismarck Moritz win by the 10-run mercy rule. Brunskill, a first-year team member, finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, triple and four runs batted in.
U-Mary teammate Maegan Lunn joined Brunskill as a first-year player. Lunn was also an all-NSIC selection.
"They needed a couple extra players on the team,"said Brunskill, who is from Valley Center, Calif. "They picked me up. I called Mae and said they needed a couple more players, and she wanted to play too."
Brunskill said hitting a slowpitch ball shouldn't throw her timing off for the college season, although she did admit that it's been an adjustment.
"If anything it might help me be a little more patient because I'm pretty impatient,"she said. "Our (slowpitch) coach, Brian Schmidt, has helped me. He has helped me recognize the strike zone better and where I should hit the ball."
Brunskill normally plays catcher in fastpitch, but manned first base during the McQuade. Lunn, normally a shortstop, played third base.
"I like playing the field,"Brunskill said. "Ihave enjoyed it. To help contribute to this was really great."
Bismarck Moritz scored in spurts to win the Class C title. It plated eight runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding 8-0 lead. It added five more in the fourth.
No. 3 hitter Cassie Smith highlighted the fourth inning with a two-run homer to left field. She batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
No. 10 hitter Pam Killoran went 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Holly Watts also added a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Bismarck Moritz won five straight games to take home the championship.
Bismarck Moritz has completed a storied decade at the McQuade. It won the Rec II title in 2003, the Class D title in 2005 and the Class C title in 2006, '08 and '09.
Bismarck Moritz returned all but three players from last season's team.
Class D
Las Vegas, Nevada, Bad Girlz won the Class D division with an 11-1 victory over Bismarck Gold and Silver.
Gold and Silver fought its way through the losers' bracket, winning three games on Sunday in order to reach the championship round.
RecI
Fargo Bellerud edged Las Vegas All Bust No Balls 6-5 in the title game of the Rec I division.
It was by far the closest game of the tournament for Bellerud. The Fargo club beat Dickinson Bud Light Lime/Dakota Community Bank 13-1 in the quarterfinals and Bismarck Capital City Construction 13-9.
Rec II
Mandan Leingang Construction claimed championship hardware again when it defeated Williston Midway Lounge and Casino 12-6 in Rec II.
Mandan Leingang won the title in the same division in 2003, but only four players are still with the team.
This year's squad is made up of players mostly in their late 20s, with a few older ones.
"We have been doing well," sponsor and manager Dean Leingang said. "We expected to do well at this tournament."
While Mandan Leingang has been consistently stroking the ball, its defense was equally solid.
"I knew if we could score runs we could win this tournament because our defense is so solid,"said Leingang, whose team won five straight for the crown.
Rec III
The first time was a charm for Mandan Plato's Closet. The team entered the McQuade for the first time and ended up winning the Rec III title.
Plato's Closet, a team made up of 16-18-year-olds, has been playing together for three years.
"We were just hoping to win a couple of games," first baseman Heather Schulz said. "We were not expecting to take first. Everybody was underestimating us because we're so young and little, but we have hitting and speed."
Plato's Closet won five games at the McQuade and got a boost from its bats. Schulz said the squad turned in an inning with 10 runs and another with 15.
"We felt like we deserved it,"Schulz said. "We were hitting amazing this weekend. We felt like it was for us. We had some beautiful innings."
