10 years ago (1997):The wind chill was 80 degrees below zero when Sammy Siratei hopped off the plane at the Bismarck airport. With nary a coat to his name, the Kenyan middle distance runner knew he had finally realized his dream.

But first he head to find some way to keep warm.

"I have gloves now," the 27-year-old University of Mary freshman said. "I did not know how to put them on, Now I have mask. I learned how to adjust."

It took Siratei and the university a year of time and a ton of paperwork to get the middle distance runner from his home in Kapsabet to the U.S. As if not wanting to waste anymore time, Siratei broke two U-Mary indoor records his first time out.

In fact, setting records was easier than mustering the courage to run around inside a building, Siratei said. "Something was going on here. I could not run indoors, I did not know how to run. I used a trick to say I was tired from traveling."

Once he put his fears behind him, he put his pursuers there as well. At North Dakota State, Siratei set school records in the 1,000 meters (2:34.59) and mile (4:26.50).

"I gained courage. Then I was told I broke a record," Siratei said. "I said OK."

20 years ago (1987): Another nine points and it would have been an ideal evening for the University of Mary women's basketball team.

U-Mary won a grudge match over State University of North Dakota-Mayville, defeating the Comets 86-73 at the Activity Center. That makes up for a 74-53 loss to the Comets at Mayville.

But the Marauders wanted more than win; they wanted a victory by more than the 21 points in the loss to Mayville. That would have given them a home-court advantage for the playoffs should U-Mary and Mayville finish tied for second in the Women's Athletic Conference of North Dakota.

U-Mary and Mayville are currently tied for second with 5-3 records. If they stay tied for second, they play each other at Mayville. So, nine more points and it would be at the Activity Center.

"We were thinking about those 22 points, especially right down at the end," said Patti Mercer, U-Mary center.

Mercer proved her point by scoring 25 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking four shots.

Renae Amundson came off the bench and went 4-for-5 from the field in the second half and finished with 11 points. Josie Keller scored 13 and Kari Pearson added 12, while Karen Sebastian had 11 and Mary Miller chipped in 10.

50 years ago (1957): The fate of the Bismarck Barons baseball team may be decided when officials will attempt to complete the annual meeting which was recessed last October.

Then it was decided that the 25 persons who attended comprised too small a group to permit a representative opinion on the future operation of the local Man-Dak League entry.

Last season the Barons led the standings through much of the season and finished in second place, two games behind champion Williston Oilers.

Definite decisions regarding the 1957 operation must be made since the league meeting will be held next week in Minot.

One of the important items of concern will be the replacement of five directors of the sponsoring Bismarck Baseball Assn. Inc. They retired after two-year terms.

The four holdovers of the nine-man board have submitted resignations, but more recently some have indicated they might serve out their terms.

Retiring are: W.F. Kunz, Arvid Wiklund, A.A. Mayer, Carl Boustead and John O. Hjelle. The holdovers include Glenn C. Vantine, W.T. Bristol, V. E. Kielty and Richard Rausch.
