Rogers, Smith cited by NSIC

University of Mary point guard Kayla Rogers was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's women's basketball player of the week - becoming the first freshman to win the award this season.

The 5-foot-9 freshman averaged 20.5 points and 5 assists a game as U-Mary earned its first conference road win this past weekend.

Rogers, a Mandan native, shot 64 percent from the field and buried nine 3-pointers.

John Smith of Winona State was the men's player of the week. The 6-8 center averaged a double-double in a pair of wins. Against Upper Iowa he had 28 points and 15 rebounds.

Smith, a native of McHenry, Ill., was 14 of 23 from the field and a perfect 13 of 13 from the free-throw line. It was the third time he won the honor.

Holen, Holyoak cited by DAC

Jake Holen of Jamestown College has been named the Dakota Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 20 points in a pair of wins this past weekend.

The junior was 12 of 17 from the field, including a red hot 10 of 11 from beyond the arc. He also connected on 10 of 11 free-throw tries.

Holen is a native of LaMoure.

Bethany Holyoak of South Dakota Tech was the women's player of the week. The 6-0 freshman averaged 18 points and eight rebounds in a pair of conference victories. The freshman was 14 of 27 from the field and a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Holyoak is a native of Moorcraft, Wyo.

Brittany Mayer had two goals and an assist and picked up the Tiffany Eikanas award as the top senior girls hockey player in Bismarck as the Blizzard downed Mandan 8-0.

Lauren Kringstad had a hat trick for Bismarck, while Trisah Evenson and Samantha Harris also turned in multi-point nights.

The Eikanas award is named for Tiffany Eikanas, a former player who passed away in a car accident. It is given to the senior that best displays hockey skill, academic ability and leadership. Meyer is among the state leaders in scoring with 23 goals and 12 assists in 20 games.
