Carlie Buechler never met a net she couldn't blister.
The Bismarck High sharpshooter hopes to put on a shooting display during the Lions All-Star girls basketball series, scheduled for today at the Civic Center and Wednesday in Fargo.
The series matches up the top graduated seniors from Class A against those in Class B. The roster selections are made by the coaches.
"She is such a shooting threat," former Bismarck coach Andrea (Ronderos) Erdmann said of Buechler. "She's a streaky shooter. Once she's hot, it's tough to cool her down. If she's got daylight, it's a good shot. It doesn't matter if it's a 15-footer or a 22-footer."
Buechler will be joined in the all-star series by teammate Kelsey Sigl, who was a North Dakota Miss Basketball finalist this past winter. The pair will be teammates this coming school year at Bismarck State.
Teammate Sara Feeney, the Class A state tournament MVP, will not play in the series because she's attending summer school at the University of Denver where she will embark on her college basketball career.
Erdmann and Century coach Ron Metz will coach the Class A girls team. It will be a last hurrah for Erdmann, as she resigned after the season.
Buechler was a starting guard for the Demons, who upset Fargo South for their first state crown in 18 years and finished the season at 20-5 overall.
Buechler, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 10.4 points and 2.7 rebounds a game while netting 26 3-pointers. She handed out 59 assists and collected 34 steals.
"It's really an honor to be chosen as a person to play," Buechler said. "Not everybody gets an opportunity to play."
Erdmann believes that Buechler can contribute to the Class A team, especially if she gets in the shooting zone.
"She's fearless," Erdmann said. "She doesn't back down from any challenges. She rolls on her confidence. That's what gives her her streakiness. Once she hits one, there's no stopping her."
The magic key to Buechler's shooting success is between her ears.
"Your shot is mental," she said. "If you don't think you're going to make it, you're not going to make it. When you get open looks, you've got to shoot the ball."
And Erdmann will give Buechler the green light to pull the trigger.
"She listens really well," Erdmann said. "She knows for her team to do well she needs to keep shooting the ball. She keeps shooting, no matter how she's shooting."
Erdmann described Buechler's season as very consistent, a factor that helped BHS win a state title and land her on the all-star roster.
"Carlie was a secret weapon people forgot about," Erdmann said. "She was deadly from the outside all year long. She had a consistent year."
For Buechler, the all-star series is a chance to form new friendships, especially against former opponents.
"All these years we've been playing against each other, now we have a chance to come together and get to know each other," Buechler said.
