10 years ago (1997):On an afternoon perfectly suited for state qualifying, the invincible Minot High School girls track team looked quite ordinary, Mandan looked extraordinary and Hazen junior Amber Klein looked unbeatable.
Mandan's Carrie Fleck and Kari House broke meet records and helped the Braves to a comfortable victory in the Mandan Kiwanis girls track meet at Lefty Faris Field.
The Braves rolled up 135 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Century's 105. Four-time defending state champion Hazen, led by Klein's victories in the mile and two-mile, was the highest-placing Class B team with 56 points.
The Braves won eight of 18 events, including the shot put where Fleck rebounded from her only non-winning meet of the year to throw a meet record 42-3. House broke the triple jump mark with a 35-93/4.
Other meet records to fall included the long jump where meet MVP Lacy Hinzpeter of Minot soared 18-4, and the 800 relay where the Century team of Juanita Braun, Kristen Bachmeier, Suzie Salak and Anne Jorgenson finished in 1:45.33.
In all, 67 state qualifying standards were met, including two by Klein, the defending state 3,200 champion.
20 years ago (1987): While Fargo South as been walking tall in the East, the Western Dakota Association boys track teams have been holding a tag-team wrestling match.
The state meet is but 18 days away. That leaves two or possibly three more meets for qualifying purposes.
But really, the state meet has taken pretty good shape with the Bruins a solid favorite.
For sure, there will be more athletes to qualify in the next two weeks, but they may not have a great impact on the state meet.
In addition, even though some athletes may have reached qualifying standards, we haven't seen a lot of their best efforts.
Take, for instance, Bismarck High's Warren Schatz. He'll have a busy two days at state, running in the 400, 800, 1,600-relay and 3,200-relay.
Yet, Schatz has only seen the open 800 once this season. He said he hopes to run that race two more times before state.
And then there's Howard Hausauer. Most folks in the state have already conceded the shot put and discus titles to him. So he's trying to pick up additional points in the javelin.
Still, looking at the overall picture, it appears that Fargo South will go to the post with better odds to win the state meet than Demons Begone had to win the Kentucky Derby.
50 years ago (1957): Jim Ackers, right-handed pitcher whom the Barons once had given up hope of getting, popped back into the picture as a definite possibility for the Bismarck club's mound staff.
The 26-year-old Ackers is regarded as potentially the strongman of the Barons' hurling corps and if landed would be the second half of a left-right nucleus already half formed.
The first half is in the person of Jackie Bowes, left-hand-throwing veteran who wired the Barons that he had accepted their terms.
Both Bowes and Ackers were men Manager BIll Hockenbury set out to get early in the player-contracting period, but for awhile it appeared that neither would be available.
R.P. Rausch, chairman of the player contract committee, said the Barons have agreed to terms also with a college pitcher and a college first baseman, but do not intend to release their names until confirming letters have been received from them.
