Trivia answer

From 1D: On this date in 1984, Rick Mears won the Indianapolis 500 by the largest margin in 17 years with a record-setting 163.612 mph. Mears beat Roberto Guerrero and Al Unser by two laps. Fifteen of the 33 drivers were eliminated during two crashes.

10 years ago (1998):If there's one song the Washburn High School baseball team doesn't want to hear from the sound system at Jamestown's Jack Brown Stadium, it's "Thanks for the Memories."

The Jamestown ballpark, site of the state high school baseball tournament, has been anything but a fun house for Washburn over the years.

Each of the last seven years the Cardinals have qualified for state. They've reached the finals twice - in 1992 and 1993 - but they have no championships.

Coach Tyler Schlecht doesn't buy into the "jinx."

Senior right-handers Justin Dally and Brandon Kramer have been the pitching workhorses for Washburn. Justin Kuball, Trapper Wagner, Cody Wagner, Nick Krebsbach and Derek Spitzer can also pitch.

Benji Shafer is the catcher and Jon Sheldon plays center field. Luke Retterath shares time in left field.

20 years ago (1988): It's nearly impossible to bluff your way into the winner's circle at the state track meet. But there are still a few wild cards out there and Mandan's Dean Johnson is ready to deal.

Field events, after all, seem a little more tricky on game day. And even though Johnson doesn't have the top high jump, or the best throw in the javelin, he could come away with a blue ribbon.

Fargo South's Todd Johnson, last year's winner, has the best throw of 221-5, but he will be at a different meet.

Mandan's Johnson has a top throw of 212-7 and he beat South's Johnson in a meet two weeks ago in Minot.

Making the javelin more interesting is Steve Haman of St. Mary's, the WDA record-holder. His best toss is 206-2.

The high jump could emerge as a head-to-head battle between Mandan's Johnson and teammate Clint Leingang.

The two have finished 1-2 in many meets this season, but Leingang is considered the favorite.

50 years ago (1958): VALLEYCITY -Golfers from Bismarck and Grand Forks shared honors in the annual North Dakota high school tournament.

Bismarck's Bob Smith was medalist with a 5-over-par 77 at the Valley City Town and Country Club to win the singles crown.

Craig Simmons and Pete Fritzel of Grand Forks totaled 160 for the doubles title. There were 78 entries representing 18 schools.

Simmons and Bill Yagla of Grand Forks each totaled 78 for runner-up honors in the singles division. Ron Anderson teamed with Smith to give Bismarck a second-place tie in doubles with Gordon Aamoth Jr., and Tom McLeod of Fargo. Both duos had 162, with Anderson carding an 85.

Fritzel won the driving contest, his wood shot going 270 yards. He edged Tom Wimmer of Fargo by less than one yard.
