10 years ago (1998):VALLEY CITY - Jon Arenz tossed a three-hitter and Tracy Geffre drove in three runs as the Mandan Chiefs rolled past Valley City 7-1 in American Legion baseball action.

Arenz, who has allowed just two earned runs in his last 14 innings, gave up three hits. He lost his shutout in the bottom of the seventh. Geffre's three-run double highlighted Mandan's four-run top of the fifth.

20 years ago (1988): The Bismarck Governors put on exhibitions of steady baseball and power baseball in defeating the West Fargo Patriots 7-2 and 12-3 in an American Legion baseball doubleheader.

In the first game, Bismarck pitchers Jon Gums and Jim Patton combined on a five-hitter. The Governors, while getting seven hits, took advantage of four West Fargo errors. Chad Spotts homered and doubled for the winners.

In the second game it was all power with the Governors rapping 15 hits. Brent Ruff had three hits and one walk in his four appearances at the plate. Gums went 3-for-4.

50 years ago (1958): Jim Fischer, the Linton speed demon, has attracted attention from nearly every school in North Dakota as well as at least two large colleges outside the state.

He recently was a guest of the athletic department of the University of Minnesota. Following that, he was a guest of the University of Colorado.

Fischer was the key man on Linton's last two Class B state track champions, specializing in the 440. He also runs the 100 and 220.
