Velva, Mott-Regent still on top

Velva and Mott-Regent continued their respective hold on the top spots in the Class Aand 9-man football polls.

Lakota was the only newcomer in either poll, moving into the No. 5 spot on the 9-man list. Divide County and Richland swapped spots from a week ago, with the Maroons moving up one spot to No. 3.

The top five all stayed the same in the Class Apoll.

Hole-in-one

Quenton Wentz of Bismarck scored a hole-in-one Wednesday at Hawktree Golf Course.

Wentz used a 5-wood to ace the 185-yard No. 17 hole.

Witnesses were Preston Wentz, Darcy Wentz and John Starkey.

HORSEMANSHIP

GULLYWINSNATIONALTITLE

Kelly Gully took home the 2006 Bayer Select world reigning championship with her horse Whoa Fritzie Whoa recently.

Gully captured the title at the American Quarter Horse Association-sponsored World Championship Show at Amarillo, Texas with a 217 riding Whoa Fritzie Whoa. She also finished fourth with Sailors Luv Freckles, scoring a 212.5.

The double placement by Gully was only the second such achievement in the history of the world championship show.

Gully, a graduate of Bismarck High and a former rodeo queen at North Dakota State University, is the daughter of Ken and Berdeal Bergo of Bismarck. She resides in Newell, S.D., with her husband, Jack.

TENNIS

BISMARCKTEAMQUALIFIES FORNATIONALS

A Bismarck-Mandan team captained by Brian Reinowski has qualified for national competition.

The Reinowski team advanced by winning the 7.0 division of the USTANorthern Section Mixed Doubles League Tennis Championships recently in the Twin Cities.

With the sectional championship they earned a spot in the Western Region Mixed Doubles Nationals in Las Vegas in November.

The Reinowski team downed the Joe Sisco team from the TwinCities 2-1 in the finals. The two teams split the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches with the No. 3 match going to a third-set supertiebreaker. In the decisive match TimHill and Carol Kapp edged David Neis and CindyFoley 6-3, 3-6 and 10-7 in the supertiebreaker.

Other members of the Bismarck-Mandan team are Brian Dever, TimHill,Jim Lennington,Cheryl Loerch, Scott McPherson, Diane Roller,Nancy Walz and SandyWald-Clooten.

The champions went 3-0 in pool play to earn their berth in the finals. They are the first Bismarck mixed doubles team to capture a sectional title.
