Bismarck Governors leadoff hitter Cody Erhardt will admit that a changeup isn't the pitch most American Legion batters would like to swing at.
Erhardt took his chances at hitting the off-speed pitch in the sixth inning against Fargo Post 2.
Erhardt placed the 1-1 pitch from Ben Sand to the line of left field to drive in pinch runner Darron Olson with two outs. Erhardt's double gave the Governors a 6-5 victory over the No. 2-seeded team in the Eastern Division on Saturday night at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark in non-conference action.
Fargo won the nightcap 5-3.
"It was an inside pitch, so I pulled it," said Erhardt, who went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. "I saw it come out of his hand and I said, 'That's the one I have to hit.' "
Fargo left fielder Tim Rude made a diving attempt to catch Erhardt's rap, but couldn't make the grab.
"I knew it was going to go to the outfield," Erhardt said. "I knew he would have to make a heck of a play. I thought he caught it."
Governors coach Mike Skytland said he felt confident with Erhardt in that situation.
"He's a good contact hitter," Skytland said. "He knows the strike zone. A good changeup pitcher keeps hitters off balance. It's hard to get good aggressive cuts. Cody did a good job."
Fargo plated three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to knot the score at 5-5. Bismarck pitcher Zach Klabo ran into his first jam when he walked two and gave up a hit with two outs.
A Bismarck error caused two runs to come in and catcher Cory Shelton singled in a run. Klabo threw 6 1-3 innings and gave up just two earned runs in 93 pitches.
Skytland was pleased with how his hurler regained his composure after the fifth inning.
"It was just two guys where he really got into trouble," Skytland said. "He was able to get out of it. He did a good job the next inning. His changeup keeps the better hitting teams off balance."
Tyler Johnson relieved Johnson and got the final two outs and the save.
No. 9 hitter Jeremy Campbell got things rolling for the Governors by leading off the third inning when he bunted and legged out the throw. He advanced to second base on an error. Erhardt, Zach Wentz and Torey Bohan all singled in runs to put the Governors up 3-2.
"Jeremy did that on his own," Skytland said. "It was a big play to get something going. He's got a lot of speed. He's a left-handed hitter so if he can get the ball down, he has a good chance to get on."
Johnson also collected a pair of hits for the Governors. Wentz doubled and drove in a run. Sand went the distance for Fargo and was tagged with the loss.
Tanner Bonbenger led Post 2 offensively by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Fargo pushed four runs across in the seventh inning to win the second game.
Eric Jagim scored on a throwing error and Eric Flacksbarth crossed on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run. No. 3 hitter Billy Sholl singled in two runs to add insurance.
"(Sholl) is the kind of guy we can depend on to get that big hit," Fargo coach Bill Ibach said. "If it would have been somebody else I would have thought about squeezing."
Fargo pitcher Anthony Schutz had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning.
Bismarck No. 3 hitter Dustin Wenzel led off with a triple to break the no-no. Matt Loomis singled in Wenzel and Loomis walked in to put Bismarck ahead 2-1.
But Bismarck's lead was short-lived when Fargo rallied in the seventh.
Post 2 finished the contest with 10 walks issued. The Governors managed just five hits.
Fargo turned two double plays, a 5-3 double in the fourth and a 3-6-1 double to end the game.
