10 years ago (1999): One of Ed Kringstad's heroes is Abe Lincoln. Perfect.

It's logical that Kringstad would choose one of the most self-effacing of American presidents.

Today is the last day on the job for Kringstad, the Bismarck State College athletic director. He's closing out his 34th academic year at BSC.

Ten eventual NJCAAchampions were recruited to BSC during Kringstad's 23 years as head wrestling coach. When Kringstad gave up his duties as head wrestling coach after the 1987-88 season, he had racked up a 309-65-1 dual record.

20 years ago (1989): The name has changed but the game's the same for Bismarck golfer Cherlene Horner Nelson. The newlywed of 2½ weeks continued her longstanding honeymoon in the Prairie Rose women's golf tournament by wrapping up her fourth title.

Horner finished the three-day tour of Bismarck-Mandan courses with a 266, including an 88 at Riverwood and 89s at Apple Creek and Mandan.

Sharon Johnson finished second.

50 years ago (1959): Satchel Paige and the Cuban Giants will make a return appearance here, playing a team of local amateurs.

This will mark the second time the team has played here this summer. On June 12 they defeated a local team 12-3.

Paige, one of the greatest pitchers of all time, hurle d the first three innings here in the first game, giving up one run and two hits.
