10 years ago (1998):The University of Mary volleyball team changed speeds and picked its spots so well in the early part of a match with Dickinson State, the Marauders made pitcher Greg Maddux look like a rank amateur.
U-Mary had the Blue Hawks - the No. 6 team in the country - reeling, winning the first game 15-11 and grabbing a 7-4 lead in the second.
Then Mark McGwire came to the plate.
Dickinson State's heavy hitters - Neslihan Yilmaz, Funda Aliskan and on this night, Kelly Hylland - hit one home run ball after another. The Blue Hawks rallied to take game two 15-8, then breezed through the final two games, 15-5 and 15-4.
Tina Currie dished out 58 assists for Dickinson State, while Nesrin Seckin collected 19 digs.
Kay Stumpf led U-Mary with 16 kills, while Robyn Krile added 12 kills and five blocks. Katey Ashton tallied 39 assists, while Junell Krabbenhoft led the Marauders with 15 digs.
20 years ago (1988): What appeared to be a gamble was a sure thing in the mind of Mandan quarterback K.J. Coghlan.
Coghlan clicked with split end Mike Ressler for 32 yards on a right sideline pattern that set up the only score in Mandan's 7-0 victory over Century.
The victory was Mandan's third straight and brought the school's 23-game Western Dakota Association losing streak to an abrupt halt.
Ressler advanced to the CHS 4-yard line before being hauled down by Chris Buchholtz.
Fullback Scott Russell went off the left side for two two-yard carries in the next two plays and Mandan had its touchdown with 1:35 left in the first half.
Jason Arenz kicked the extra point for the Braves.
Mike Walz ran the ball 18 times for 107 yards for the Patriots.
