Jessica Zundel still feels the need to score when the ball is in her hands.
The former University of Mary standout tacked up 31 points to lead Bismarck Westcon to a 76-66 victory over Cottingham Insurance in the Women's I division of the state amateur basketball tournament.
The left-handed Zundel scored on several turnarounds and mid-range jumpers Sunday at Century High School. She finished as the division's most valuable player.
Zundel admitted that her body needs more recovery time from when she played college ball.
"I run five miles a day and I play noon ball with the guys twice a week," the 24-year-old said. "I'm not old, but my body is aging slowly."
Loni Hall added 13 for Westcon and Missy Schmidt and Stacie Luther added 10 each.
Most of Zundel's Westcon teammates were people she played against at U-Mary, where she finished as a two-time NAIA All-American.
She played ball at U-Mary with four of Cottingham's players.
"It can be good because you know them,"said Zundel, who graduated as U-Mary's career leading scorer with 1,824 points, "but the bad thing is they know you."
Westcon was defeated by Cottingham 93-84 on Saturday. Westcon beat Dickinson Liquid Assets 85-65 on Sunday in the losers' bracket to advance into the championship game. Saturday's victory over Westcon automatically put Cottingham into Sunday's title game.
"They shot well (on Saturday)," Zundel said. "Me, personally, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn."
Andrea Ronderos and Sarah Cornell led Cottingham in scoring on Sunday. Ronderos, last year's tournament MVP, netted 19. Cornell added 17. Pam Killoran finished with 11 points, including three straight 3-pointers.
Zundel scored from the right side at 5:17 of the first half to give Westcon a 28-26 advantage and the lead for good. Westcon led by as many as 11 points in the first half.
Cottingham came within two points three times in the second half but couldn't get any closer.
