10 years ago (1998): When Steve Tucker awoke to find fresh snow falling, he felt alive again.

It helped that the arrival of winter coincided with the arrival of rookies and free agents, who came to Bismarck for the start of the Dakota Wizards training camp.

B.J. Williams, a backup center from Kansas, and forwards Charles Lott of James Madison and Roger Washington of Louisiana State looked good after one day. But their toughest competition will come next week when four veteran front-liners arrive in camp.

Veteran Wizards Shawn Bankhead and Kevin Bears are coming in, as are Johnny Tyson, formerly of the Fargo Beez, and Daron Rutledge.

20 years ago (1988): Tom Kirchoffner isn't used to being anywhere but the top of the state junior college men's basketball standings.

It's season No. 5 for Kirchoffner at Bismarck State and time to get back to the top of the state junior college standings. He got off to a tremendous start with the Mystics, winning the state championship each of his first three years.

Freshman Burleigh Lester will quarterback BSC and look often to Bismarck native Bob Upgren. Rob Ganje and Mike Hillstrom return after starting last season. Hillstrom is from Center.
