10 years ago (1999): BEACH - When the Beach Lady Buccaneers take the court for their first basketball game of the 1999 season, it will be under the leadership of a championship coach.

Bob Waldal, the coach who led the Lady Bucs to Class B girls basketball state championships in 1989 and 1990, is coaching again. He has been hired as the head girls and boys basketball coach for this school year.

Waldal, 53, recently sold his business, a lounge in Beach. He said he was ready to retire and ready to return to coaching.

"It's a refreshing change for me," he said.

20 years ago (1989): To no one's surprise, Tom Sturdevant has been named the new head football coach at Century High School.

Sturdevant has served as an assistant coach at Century the past three years. He replaces Dave Preszler, who resigned to become an assistant coach at Montana State University.

Sturdevant, a 1977 Valley City State graduate, has coached high school athletics for 11 years. He coached at Turtle Mountain Community High School in Belcourt for two years, and at Dickinson Trinity for six years.

He was named Class A football coach of the year in 1985, while at Trinity.

50 years ago (1959): DICKINSON - Minot, stifled for six innings by the slow curves of Williston's Ted Hopgood, found the range in the final three innings and whipped Williston 13-2 for the championship in the Western Division Class A Legion tournament.

Hopgood allowed just one run through six innings, but Minot scored two in the seventh, seven in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Irv Johnson belted an inside-the-park home run for the winners, and teammate Don Smutzler went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.

Roger Bowles had a big day on the mound and at the plate for Minot. He scattered eight hits and struck out 14 in a complete-game effort. He also singled three times and drove in four runs.
