Jeff Werner provided the muscle and Reid Jungling took care of the finesse. Together, they led Mandan to a 5-4 comeback victory over Devils Lake in Legion baseball on Thursday at Memorial Ballpark.
The win ended a four-game skid for the home-standing Chiefs.
Devils Lake came back swinging in the second game, pounding out 17 hits for a 18-5 six-inning win.
Jungling, Mandan's left-hander, fell behind 3-0 early in the first game on two unearned runs and as Chris Hoerth home run. Then he shut the door - and waited.
"The only way my teammates can get help from me is if I just keep it close and let them worry about the offense," Jungling said as he assessed his third win.
Jungling said he tried to stay on an even keel and not worry about the scoreboard. "I just try to be myself," he said
After Devils Lake jumped ahead 3-0 in the first two innings, Jungling used a TANTALIZING array of offspeed stuff to rack up four shutout innings.
"I guess I got a couple of guys guessing on those (breaking pitches)," he related. "… Sometimes I can't get that (curve) over consistently for a strike, but when I can it keeps them guessing."
Mandan's offense finally came to Jungling's aid in the fifth after Devils Lake right-hander Lance Johansen had put up four shutout innings.
Johansen walked Brandon Leingang and Jason Mellmer to start the fifth and, with one out, Brandon Coyle lined a double to right, driving in two runs. Coyle scored when Matt Keller grounded to third baseman Jason Burdick, who threw wide to first. First baseman Jayson Miller gloved the throw, tagged Keller and dropped the ball for an error.
That tied the game at 3-3, but the deadlock was short-lived.
Werner, Mandan's six-foot, 220-pound designated hitter, knocked a 1-1 pitch over the screen monster and Third Street Southwest to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Werner, who struck out on three fastballs in the fourth inning, said he caught up with a Johansen fastball for the round-tripper.
"He was working a lot outside and I'm more of a pull hitter," Werner said. "He got one over the heart of the plate, so I just sat back and drilled it. … Every at-bat I look for that pitch."
To Jungling, Werner's shot was a thing of beauty. "I was standing up (in the dugout) and watching it. About halfway through the ball's path I started going to the plate because I knew it was out of here," the pitcher related.
Two-out singles by Sam Salveson, Coyle and Paul Moch gave Mandan a 5-3 lead.
Devils Lake made a run at Jungling in the seventh. Derek Johansen cracked a leadoff double and came around to score on two fly balls. Jungling escaped further damage, however, getting Jayson Miller on a lineout to end the game.
The nightcap was all Devils Lake. Putting five runs on the scoreboard in the first inning, the Storm led from wire to wire. All five first-inning runs were unearned as the Chiefs committed four of what would become seven errors.
Mandan pitchers Matt Bosch, Paul Moch and Andrew Tweet added to the fire by walking 10 batters and hitting two.
Josh Lagein was Devils Lake's offensive leader in the nightcap, banging out three singles and a double, scoring five times and knocking in a pair of runs. Jason Burdick added three hits for the Storm, who snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 13-9 on the season.
James Olderbak and Jayson Miller split the pitching chores for Devils Lake, limiting Mandan to four earned runs.
