After a dozen games on the road, the Bismarck Governors finally got to play on home turf at Municipal Ballpark on Wednesday.
Dustin Wenzel celebrated the occasion by doubling home a run in his first at-bat and igniting a 5-1 Western Division victory over the Devils Lake Storm. The Governors outlasted Devils Lake 8-7 in the nightcap.
"It was really good to be in our own ballpark and have the home crowd back," Wenzel said.
Home or road, rain or shine, it really hasn't mattered for Wenzel. He cracked the ball hard during an injury-interrupted senior season at Century, earning all-state honors.
It's been more of the same in Legion ball. Wenzel entered the twin bill with Devils Lake hitting .410 and gained ground in the first game with a single and double in three at-bats with two RBIs and two runs scored. He got the collar in three at-bats in the nightcap.
In three months of baseball, Wenzel said the only thing that's passed as a slump is "maybe three games" of hitless baseball.
"I've been seeing the ball really well and that aluminum (bat in Legion baseball) gives you that extra pop," he observed.
Wenzel said the left shoulder he dislocated during the high school season hasn't been a factor in the Legion season. "It's healed really well. The shoulder is feeling really good. There's no pain in it."
Wenzel's two RBIs were all the Governors needed in support of lefty Jeremy Campbell, who held the Storm to four singles. The only run Campbell surrendered was an unearned tally in the first inning.
Devils Lake opened scoring when Josh Lagein reached second base on shortstop Justin Connell's throwing error and scored on Jayson Miller's single.
Bismarck answered with two unearned runs in the home first, Wenzel doubling in the first and Connell sending Wenzel home with a two-bagger.
Torey Bohan and Connell rapped run-scoring singles as the Governors made it 4-1 in the home third. Wenzel sent home Cody Erhardt with an RBI single for Bismarck's final run in the fourth.
Although Devils Lake managed just one tainted run off Campbell, the 19-year-old lefty admitted his outing was a 114-pitch ordeal. He stranded eight runners, five in scoring position, due in large part to five walks.
"It was a struggle," said Campbell, now 1-1. "The fastball wasn't working so the offspeed stuff was all I could throw for strikes."
But pitching with a lead most of the game made the task easier. "It was good to have the support. The guys were hitting the ball well from the word 'go,'" Campbell noted.
Defensively, Campbell reaped the benefits of a double play and a defensive gem by Wenzel at second base. With runners on first and third and two out in the third inning, Devils Lake cleanup man Jayson Miller rapped a groundball to second base. The ball took a bad bounce and Wenzel, moving to his left, had to employ Plan B.
"I was going one way and it jumped off the grass and went the other way. I just stuck out my (bare) hand and got lucky," Wenzel said.
The result was an anything-but-routine second-to-first groundout.
Devils Lake again drew first blood in the second game, putting two unearned runs in the books in the top of the first off Bismarck right-hander Matt Loomis.
Bismarck responded with five in the second as Cody Erhardt smacked a three-run double into the gap in right-center.
Jared Schmidt banged out a two-run single as Devils Lake tied it 5-5 with three runs in the third.
The Storm went ahead 7-6 with two unearned runs in the fourth.
Bismarck tied the game 7-all in the bottom of the inning as Erhardt reached base via a bad-hop single and eventually scored on Torey Bohan's groundout.
The Governors's winning run was a gift. Devils Lake right-hander Josh Greene walked the bases full in the bottom of the fifth. At that point, Storm coach Tyler Knutson brought in Jayson Miller. Hill walked Erhardt to force in what proved to be the winning run.
