The Minot Missile made a direct hit on a milestone.
Donny Schatz, a native of Minot, picked up his 100th career World of Outlaws sprint car series "A" feature victory on Saturday night, besting 23 other drivers before a full house at Mandan's Dacotah Speedway.
Schatz, who is leading the World of Outlaws points standings, became only the fifth WoO driver to reach the 100-victory mark. He joined Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Doug Wolfgang and Mark Kinser.
"I'm glad it finally happened, and I'm glad it happened here in North Dakota," said Schatz, who posted his first WoO feature victory in 1998. "I was hoping to get it either in Grand Forks (Friday) or here. It would have been great to get it anywhere, but to do it in North Dakota makes it extra special. I wanted to share it with the fans who have been so supportive over the years."
Schatz, who finished fourth on a wet track in Grand Forks on Friday night, now has 12 WoO feature victories this season and 15 overall. He earned $10,000 for the win and extended his lead to 92 points over second-place Jason Meyers of Clovis, Calif. Meyers came in third Saturday night.
Schatz is seeking his fourth consecutive WoO championship.
"It was a big win for us. Every win is going to be big from here on out," Schatz said. "We're getting close to the end (of the season). We have to start picking up the pace and get as many wins as we can to wrap this up."
Schatz started Saturday night's 35-lap feature in the fifth position. He moved up to third place during the second lap, but fell back to fourth one go-round later. He stayed there for the next 15 laps, but moved into third on lap 18. He later passed Meyers for second place on lap 22, and then overtook leader Danny Lasoski of Dover, Mo., on the 23rd go-round. Lasoski led 21 of the first 22 laps.
Traveling at speeds of around 100 miles per hour, Schatz held off Lasoski and Meyers the rest of the way, capturing the checkered flag by 2.54 seconds.
"The track was in great shape tonight and the car ran great the whole way," said Schatz, who finished fourth when the World of Outlaws visited Mandan last summer. "The car got better and better as the race went on and that's been characteristic of it this year. I gotta hand it to my pit crew. They've been doing a great job all year.
"It was just great racing tonight," he continued. "There was one point that we were about to go four-wide for the lead and I thought this cannot be happening. It was great racing in front of a great crowd. You couldn't ask for more."
Schatz, who is seven wins shy of fourth place on the all-time list, won for the first time in Mandan and has now won WoO features on 50 different tracks. However, he has yet to get a win on his home track in Minot (Nodak Speedway).
"That's something I'm hoping to change soon," he said. "I came close a few times, but couldn't get it done. That'll be one of the main goals again next year."
Lasoski posted the fastest qualifying time, circling the three-eighths mile track in 12.705 seconds. Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Ind., had the second-fastest time, 12.794 seconds.
The night also featured the Hobby Stocks, with Ron Joern of Bismarck winning the 15-lap final. It was his second win of the season.
Joern went ahead to stay during the ninth lap.
The Dacotah Speedway's season championships will be held Friday night.
