Nothing new, to be sure, but championships are still not a ho-hum event for Front Street Millwork.

"This is the Super Bowl for us has-beens," Bill Halter said after the Bismarck team defeated Minot Bitz Communications 92-77 on Sunday.

The victory at Century's Olson gym gave Front Street Millwork the Class Amen's championship in the North Dakota Amateur Basketball tournament.

With the victory, FSM avenged a 101-95 loss to Bitz in Saturday's battle of the final two unbeatens.

"They're a fantastic team but we knew we still had a chance to come back,"said 6-foot-9 Brandon Wilkens, who paced FSM with 29 points and 16 rebounds. "… That game was so close it came right down to the final two minutes."

The Class A championship was the Bismarck team's second in a row and their second straight trip through the losers' bracket. Last season FSM had to win three games on the final day to take the title. Sunday, they needed to knock off Bismarck Westcon 95-67 to earn a second crack at Bitz.

Front Street Millwork wasted little time in establishing control control in the championship game. Wilkens canned three quick 3-pointers and FSM raced to a 50-45 halftime lead. The Bismarck broke away from a 32-all tie to take a permanent lead on a short-range Wilkens basket on an in-bounds play.

Bitz made its final challenge in the middle of the second half, cutting the deficit to 58-57 on a chip shot by Scott DeLorme.

Rusty Gillette drove the lane for a basket 13 seconds later and FSM was off on a game-clinching 20-6 run. The 6-7 Halter scored on a chip shot to put the Bismarckers in control 78-63 with 6:56 to play.

Gillette hit a 3-pointer, one of 13 by FSM, to open the biggest spread, 88-71, with 3:36 to go.

Wilkens said Front Street Millwork did a better job defensively onSaturday against Bitz than on Friday.

"They shot very well (Friday). We did a lot better getting out on their shooters and rebounding after they did get a shot," he said.

Wilkens said his early burst from outside the arc opened up the game for him. "I like to go inside and I can create mismatches for some teams if I can get my shooting (from the outside) going. That usually opens up the inside for me,"he said.

Gillette was FSM's No. 2 scorer with 21 points and Halter, the Class Amost valuable player, tallied 16 points with seven rebounds.

DeLorme found the range for three 3-pointers and scored 28 points for Bitz Communications.

Halter said coming out of the losers' bracket the past two seasons has been taxing, but it has its advantages.

"It makes the championship more fulfilling. We had to come back and work harder to win it," he said.

Class C

Streeter Elevator post Gabe Erbele was all over the emotional spectrum this weekend.

The death of his aunt, Vonda Erbele, and his team's Class C men's championship in the state amateur tournament left him completely drained.

"This was a long weekend," Erbele said after Streeter put away New Town Lakeside State Bank 60-56 in the Class C championship game. "… Driving back and forth to Streeter for the funeral made it an emotional time for me. … That's why you have teammates. You can't do this alone."

Erbele and his teammates were something less than a ball of fire at the outset. Erbele missed his first six shots and Lakeside jumped away to a 10-0 lead.

Lakeside's trip to Fat City was short-lived, however. A3-pointer by TimMartin gave Streeter its first lead of the game at 23-22 with 5:19 to play in the first half.

"There are always runs and it's a matter of keeping your composure and fighting back," Erbele said of Streeter's resurgence.

Eight lead changes and two ties later, Streeter moved ahead to stay.

Streeter built a short-lived 55-46 cushion on a RonGroth layup with 1:51 to play.

New Town made it a one-possession game at 59-56 on Dallas McGrady's 3-pointer with :09 to play. Martin finally nailed down the win with a free throw that put Streeter on top 60-56 with :08 on the clock.

JonBear of Lakeside took game scoring honors with 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Erbele, with 13 points and 16 rebounds, was one of four double figure scorers for Streeter. Groth led with 15 and Martin and AndyHeflin added 13 apiece.
