10 years ago (1998):St. Mary's has been the last bastion, the one West Region team that could be counted on to make the Bismarck High boys soccer team sweat out their wins.
The last two state title games come to mind - Demon wins both, but nailbiters.
That was not the case as Bismarck ripped the Saints 5-0.
Andy Turman, Wade Mathern, Justin Fischer, Todd Huber and Joel Jahnke scored for the Demons, while Trev White and Don Stute earned assits.
Keith Wolter and Jerred Roloff each made two saves to combine on the shutout for Bismarck, while Nathan Deeter made eight saves for St. Mary's.
20 years ago (1988): Why did the chicken cross the road? What came first, the chicken or the egg? Why is the Rusty Bucket rusty?
The first two questions are meant to be teasers, but the third has an answer - of sorts.
The Rusty Bucket is rusty from crossing the Missouri River. The bucket crossed the river one more time as Mandan's cross country teams took the well-worm trophy home with a total of 69 points in the Rusty Bucket Relays.
Last year's winner was Bismarck. BHS coach Darrell Anderson has grown accustomed to yielding the bucket to has Mandan counterpart Leon House.
The Braves' Tammy Mulder won the girls race, while Bismarck's Joe Mahoney took the boys race.
In the girls race, the Demons' Jilliam Barbie was third, right ahead of Century;s Tricia Wallentine.
In the boys race, Mandan's Fred Stoskopf was second, while the Patriots' Sean Anderson finished sixth.
50 years ago (1958): George Cram, one of the brightest lights on the local golfing screne, completed a clean sweep at the Apple Creek Country Club by winning the eighth annual Bismarck-Mandan Championship Golf Tournament.
Cram won out in the championship round by defeating Harlan Hobbs one-up on the 18th hole. Cram also won medalist honors by tripping Art Bauer on the second extra hole of a sudden-death playoff after the two had tied with 3-over par 73.
Dr. W.R. Lauer, last year's champion, won consolation honors over Bauer.
The gallery was described by tournament official Harry Boyd-Snee as the largest ever to witness the tournament.
Bob Smith and Bud Wigen lost in the semifinals.
Dale Saxvik, Jim Dybdal, Merlin Rudrud, Bob Vogelsand and John Ward were the flight winners.
