10 years ago (1999): Nobody wanted this. The decision to have Bismarck's public schools - BHS and Century - form co-ops with Mandan and St. Mary's in boys tennis was made out of desperation.

"We want to have our own program again as soon as possible," Mandan athletic director Darryl Anderson said.

"Our philosophy is that we embrace all the kids in the community," said Jim Haussler, activities director for the Bismarck public schools.

Leading the way for Century will be seniors Greg Busch and Austin Hill and juniors Dan Keith, Whitney Kriengkrairut, Dan MacIntosh and Josh Dwyer. Sophomores are Steve Larsen and Matt Bosch, while Mike Sakariassen is the only freshman.

For Bismarck, Taylor Muse, Shane Delmore and Simon Fowler are the seniors, while Brad Dorsher, Matthew Hames, Mikael Olson and Mike Kapp are juniors. The sophomores are Sean Falconer, Robby Meland, Dave Morgan and Sid Murthy.

20 years ago (1989): Todd Zacher's dramatic two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh lifted Bismarck Fronteer Directory over E.R.S. of Minneapolis 4-2 in the Class A men's fastpitch softball regional tournament in Fargo.

It was the second win of the day for Fronteer, which downed Nick's Phillips 66 of Wabasso, Minn., 5-1 in the opener.

E.R.S. was leading 2-1 when Zacher connected, his second homer of the game, to make a winner of pitcher Brian Neuhardt.

Jim Kapp hurled a four-hitter to highlight the opener. Jaden Davison, John Rygg and Zacher collected two hits apiece.

Fronteers need two victories to win the tournament.

50 years ago (1959): The Indians and Red Sox will do battle for the Midget League championship after the Indians beat the Athletics 2-1 and Red Sox topped the White Sox 4-3 in two extra innings in the semifinals.

Hein had two hits for the Indians, wihle J. Hendrickson and Spah each had one. Winger scored a run.

For the Athletics, Da. Clausnitzer had the only hit and McCurdy scored the only run.

For the Red Sox, Lips had two hits, while Fischer, Allison, Beck and Miller each had one. Shaffer, Ogeirson, Stoudt and Lips each scored a run.

For the White Sox, Hopkins had two hits, while Kapsner, Kellner, Springan, Patton and Elhardt had a hit apiece. Brink, Kapsner and Springan each crossed home plate.
