The Dakota Wizards were the only D-League team that didn't get an assigned player from one of its NBA affiliates last season.

Despite that, the Wizards were more than happy to remain linked to the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies when the D-League announced its affiliations for the 2008-09 campaign.

"The relationships with both teams are good,"Wizards general manager Tom Waggener said. "… We're hoping this year the situation might be different and they might be able to send us some players."

D-League teams are allowed some input into which NBA teams they will be linked with. As in years past, the Wizards made a pitch for the Minnesota Timberwolves. When it was clear the league would not be switching the Timberwolves from Sioux Falls, the Wizards asked to keep the status quo.

This will be Dakota's third season being affiliated with Washington. Even though the D.C.-based Wizards have yet to assign a player to Dakota, Waggener said the relationship remains positive.

"They were going to send somebody last year, but they had so many injuries, they were down to 10 guys at one point," Waggener said.

This will be Dakota's second season of affiliation with Memphis, begun in part because former Wizards coach Dave Joerger joined the Grizzlies' staff as an assistant.

In this year's NBA draft, the Grizzlies have two first-round picks, fifth overall and 28th. Washington has two choices, Nos. 18 and 47.

"Obviously the fifth pick won't be coming here, but there's a chance one or more of the others could," Waggener said.

Waggener added that due to a rule change, if an NBA team cuts a draft choice, that player's D-League rights would go to its affiliate team.

In total, 10 of the 30 NBA teams will have new affiliates this year, and no D-League teams will have more than two NBA parent clubs.

Four of the changes were due to the two expansion teams: Reno will be affiliated with New York and Sacramento, while Erie is linked to Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Other NBAteams that changed were Phoenix (Albuquerque to Iowa); Orlando (Anaheim to Bakersfield); Seattle (Idaho to Tulsa); Miami (Iowa to Albuquerque); Toronto (Colorado to Idaho); and Dallas (Tulsa to Albuquerque).
