GRAND FORKS - A man wanted in Walsh County was shot in the hip during a confrontation with officers near the University of North Dakota campus, police said.

Randolph John Fugere, 40, of Grafton, was being treated Monday at Altru hospital. Police said his injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

The officer involved in the shooting, an 11-year Grand Forks police veteran, was not injured and police did not identify him. They said he was put on administrative leave with pay while the shooting is investigated.

Police said the incident happened around noon, after officers tried to serve Fugere with a warrant from Walsh County. He was spotted driving away from a Grand Forks motel with a female passenger.

Police said they chased the vehicle driven by Fugere to the Newman Center on the UND campus. Fugere abandoned the vehicle near the center and he and the female passenger ran away, authorities said.

The female, who was not identified, was arrested nearby.

Fugere was shot during a confrontation with officers near an alley a few blocks away, police said. One of the officers reported that Fugere had a handgun.

Court records show Fugere is wanted on a number of drug-related charges in Walsh County, and that he failed to appear at a pretrial conference in January.

Grand Forks Police Capt. Mike Kirby said police were trying to serve Fugere with a warrant for violating a court order.

"It was a potentially dangerous situation as the individual fled on foot," Kirby said. "We're very fortunate nothing took place of that nature."
