GRAND FORKS (AP) - A woman found dead in a burned home has been identified as the daughter of the owners.
Authorities said the body of Stacy Williams, 21, was found in a bedroom of the home early Thursday. Her parents, Herman Williams Jr. and June Williams, were not there at the time of the fire.
An 18-year-old neighbor said the family had lived on the block for as long as he could remember.
Police said Officer Derrick Johnston was checking into a report of a suspicious person, unrelated to the fire, about 1:25 a.m. Thursday, when he noticed heavy smoke and tracked it to the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Fire Department declared the home a total loss.
Firefighters remained at the scene Thursday afternoon, checking hot spots left over from the fire, Battalion Chief Rod Hadland said. Capt. Mike Sandry said the home apparently did not have a functioning smoke alarm.
