Two North Dakota National Guard units are being mobilized over the next two months for duty in Iraq and Bosnia.

Company A of the 164th Engineer Battalion, based in Minot, is headed for Iraq after training at Fort Riley, Kan., Guard officials said. The unit will be on active duty starting Aug. 5.

Guard officials said Company A has about 122 soldiers headquartered at the Minot Armed Forces Reserve Center, with a small detachment from Hazen.

The 1-112th Command Aviation Battalion, an aviation airlift task force based in Bismarck, has about 23 soldiers, the Guard said. It will be mobilized July 11 for a NATO mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and will take four of its five Black Hawk helicopters to move personnel, supplies and equipment, the Guard said.

The latest announcement brings to more than 3,000 the number of Guard soldiers mobilized since Sept. 11, 2001, said Guard spokesman Rob Keller. Only during World War I were more soldiers mobilized, with 3,700, he said.

North Dakotas are "doing their fair share," Keller said.

Most of the Guard soldiers have completed their active duty. Keller said some soldiers who recently returned from Iraq have volunteered for duty with the 164th.

About 100 soldiers with Battery F of the North Dakota National Guard's 188th Air Defense Artillery Battalion are in Iraq, Keller said. A Guard chaplain and a military lawyer from North Dakota also are deployed, he said.

Company A of the 164th works on construction projects, and is trained for combat missions, the Guard said.

Capt. Jason Steckler, of Bismarck, the commander of Company A, said in a statement that other North Dakota units have proven their ability as professionals, and "Company A will carry on that proud tradition in Iraq."

Members of the 1-112th hold a flight safety record of more than 100,000 accident-free hours dating back to 1958, the Guard said.

The unit's commander, Maj. Dave Hall, credited the "professional soldiers that support and operate these aircraft," and said they would show that same professionalism in their mission.

Both units were alerted for possible mobilization in April.
