GRAND FORKS (AP) - The results of the University of North Dakota's student body presidential election have been upheld by the student government's judicial branch.
The panel's decision on Sunday brings to an end a nearly monthlong dispute in the election that named incoming Student Body President Jay Fisher and vice presidential running mate Jordan Buhr.
The dispute centers around whether campaign slogans chalked outside a polling place the day of the election gave Fisher and Buhr an unfair advantage. The two won by 40 votes over Rachell Jacobson and Dyke Spura.
Fisher and Buhr won a previous appeal to the Student Senate's Elections Committee, which ordered them to complete 30 hours of community service. Jacobson and Spura then appealed the committee's decision to the judicial branch.
"I'm just glad this is done with and we can get to work," Fisher said Sunday.
Fisher and Buhr told the law students they'd made their best effort to remove the slogans and hadn't purposely broken the rules.
Spura said that he and Jacobson accept the judicial branch's decision.
"Rachell and I both put our faith in the system," he said. "We accept their decision, and we're glad it's over." We're glad we went through the process, and we made a lot of great friends along the way."
Fisher and Buhr took office Sunday night, replacing outgoing Student Body President Nate Martindale and Vice President Nate Hilliard.
