Authorities say horses bought with drug money
FARGO (AP) - Federal authorities investigating a drug trafficking ring in North Dakota believe some of the suspects used profits from drug sales to buy race horses.
A federal search warrant affidavit says the ring was based in Dunseith, on Turtle Mountain reservation land. It says quarter horses raced at tracks in Fargo, Shakopee, Minn., and Fort Pierre, S.D. The affidavit says one of the horses sold for $10,500.
The affidavit says drug money was used for food, veterinary bills, trailers and equipment to train the horses.
Other court documents in the case, including possible charges, have not been released.
The affidavit says the quarter horse industry is largely unregulated, which allows the buying and selling of horses to go unnoticed.
U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley had no comment.
