PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The newest consumer scam to surface in South Dakota involves a phone call threatening a shut-off of electric service.

The attorney general's office said the caller claims to represent a utility company and warns that service will be disconnected because the customer's bill is overdue. The caller demands immediate payment with a credit card number or a bank account number.

The Consumer Protection Division said consumers should not give out personal account numbers and should call their utility company if uncertain about the status of their account.
