GRAND FORKS (AP) - An area around the University of North Dakota has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.
The area includes college buildings, fraternities and sororities. Grand Forks Historic Preservation coordinator Peg O'Leary said some were part of the Wesley Methodist school that was moved from Wahpeton to Grand Forks in 1908.
O'Leary said that if the area is named to the National Register, it will be eligible for grants to help preserve the buildings.
The state Historic Preservation Board voted Friday in favor of the application.
It would be the fourth such historic district in Grand Forks.
The city says the UND district shows the changes in education from the time it was built in the 1880s through the post-World War II era.
The national register is a national list of properties considered worthy of preservation.
If approved, UND's district would join the Near Southside, Downtown and Riverside districts in Grand Forks on the list.
