An inspection at a North Dakota air base has found that a bomb wing is operating safely after coming under scrutiny for mistakenly shipping nuclear missiles.
The Air Force said Friday that the Minot Air Force base's 5th Bomb Wing "can execute its nuclear mission in a safe, secure and reliable manner."
The wing was retested this week after coming up short in an inspection in May. Maj. Elizabeth Ortiz, a spokeswoman at the Minot base, said the Air Force will not release specifics because they are classified.
"We can't talk about the findings and we can't talk about the ratings," Ortiz said.
Col. Joel Westa, the Minot Air Force Base commander, said the bomb wing passed the inspection by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Air Force.
"Without getting into details, our guys did very, very well," Westa told The Associated Press.
Inspectors in May saw a security forces airman playing video games on his cell phone while standing guard at a restricted area, the Air Force Times reported. Another airman nearby was "unaware of her duties and responsibilities" during the exercise, the newspaper said.
Nuclear cruise missiles were mistakenly loaded onto a B-52 bomber last August 30 at the Minot base and flown to a base in Louisiana.
The foul-up cost Westa's predecessor, Col. Bruce Emig, his command, though he had been base commander for only a couple of months when the incident happened.
"We've been through the fire," Westa said Friday. "It's been almost a year to the day since the incident and we've been steadily improving and we will continue to improve."
The Minot Air Force Base's 91st Missile Wing also has been under scrutiny. Last month, three of its officers fell asleep while holding classified launch codes and a vehicle carrying a rocket booster for an unarmed Minuteman II missile overturned while traveling from the base to a launch facility in northwestern North Dakota. The Air Force said the public was not in danger in either incident.
