FARGO - Skateboarders who enjoy the smooth slopes in Fargo's downtown parking ramps soon will have to look elsewhere for a thrill ride.

Skateboarding already is prohibited throughout most of the downtown area, and now city officials are cracking down on skateboarders who use city-owned parking ramps for their activity.

"They (skateboarders) are using the ramps as their playground," said Fargo Police Lt. Todd Osmundson.

The Fargo Police Department has been getting dozens of complaints recently about skateboarders in the parking ramps, Osmundson said.

But even though one skateboarding location is being taken away in Fargo, a couple others soon will be added.

Construction began May 12 on the $400,000 skateboard park at Dike West, near Fargo's Island Park.

The facility should be finished by August, said Clay Whittlesey, the Fargo Park District's assistant director of recreation.

Another indoor park is being built at a Fargo YMCA.
