North Dakotans have been hanging onto their hats, bags, and other valuables as gusty winds hit the west and central parts of the state.

The National Weather Service says the gusts Sunday hit 65 mph in Selfridge and 60 mph near Amidon.

Minot reported wind gusts of 59 mph, Hettinger and St. Anthony each 58 mph and Bismarck 53 mph, from about 2 a.m., through the late afternoon. The forecast called for the winds to diminish slowly by midnight.
