MINOT (AP) - A Minot Skyrockets player is accused of sexual assaulting a woman here, police said.
Ronnie Fields, 29, of Chicago, was arrested early Friday morning at a Minot hotel, after a report that he sexually assaulted a 24-year-old Minot woman, police said.
Sgt. Jordan Thompson said Fields was charged with criminal attempt of gross sexual imposition, a Class B felony.
Fields remained in the Ward County Jail on Saturday, police said.
The Skyrockets placed Fields on inactive reserve, which also removes him from the team's payroll. Fields had not appeared in a game since he sprained an ankle in the Skyrockets 116-101 win at Great Falls on Feb. 8.
Skyrockets head coach Chris Daleo said he was shocked by the news of the arrest.
"I'm worried because my friend is in a bad situation," Daleo said. "But if he did something wrong, he's got to pay the price. Basketball is basketball, but I am personally concerned about my friend. Its uncharacteristic of him."
Fields has been a Skyrockets player since Jan. 17. He was averaging 18.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists for Minot.
"We regret the inconvenience this arrest has caused the community of Minot," said Joe Clark, CEO and managing partner of Apex Sportstainment, which owns the Skyrockets and two other CBA teams. "This is an unfortunate situation. As with all allegations of a criminal nature, our policy is to await the outcome of a judicial proceeding before taking any action."
In 1996, Fields and two other men were convicted of misdemeanor sexual abuse charge in Wheaton, Ill. Fields, who was 19 at the time, was sentenced to two years of probation on the charge.
Former Skyrockets players DayShawn Wright, 21, and Tyronzic Andre Joseph, 25, were released from the CBA team after being arrested in December on drug charges. Minot police said they stopped the two for a traffic violation and found open containers of alcohol and a small amount of marijuana.
Wright initially pleaded not guilty to the possession charge and spent the weekend in jail. He later changed his plea. Judge Robert Holte fined him $150 and ordered him to pay $350 in court costs.
Wright and Joseph earlier were given five-day suspended jail sentences and ordered to pay about $300 in fines and fees on the charges involving alcohol, possession of marijuana by Joseph and driving under suspension and disobeying a traffic control device by Wright.
