GRAND FORKS (AP) - University of North Dakota President Charles Kupchella says he is pleased with the way the campus smoking ban is working so far.

The ban took effect Oct. 5, after about a year of planning.

At first, opponents organized chain-smoking protests, and five doors at the UND Memorial Union were spray-painted with a picture of the 1980s TV star Mr. T and the words "I pity the fool who cannot smoke at school."

Kupchella said he did not expect 100 percent compliance with the ban.

"There are those people that are addicts, after all, and there are some that are just civilly disobedient and they don't like to be told to do anything, even if it's in their own best interest -especially if it's in their own best interest," he said.

A few students and staff members have told him they are grateful and plan to quit smoking because of the ban, Kupchella said.
