DEVILS LAKE (AP) - The live-in boyfriend of a woman whose 21-month-old daughter died of head injuries has been ordered to serve seven years in prison for the child's death.

Eighteen-year-old James Alberts Jr. of St. Michael entered an Alford plea to a charge of murder in the death of Katrina Ann Rardon. He said in court that he did not remember what happened when the child died early last year, but agreed there was enough evidence to convict him.

Judge Donovan Foughty sentenced Alberts to 20 years in prison with 13 years suspended. Alberts will be given credit for time served.

Prosecutor Lonnie Olson said the girl died of head injuries after she was left alone with Alberts on Jan. 5, 2007. He said Alberts was the live-in boyfriend of the girl's mother.
