WAHPETON (AP) - The president of the North Dakota State College of Science says a no-confidence vote from faculty members is sad and disappointing.

The Science Faculty Council voted 95-1 Thursday to give Sharon Hart a vote of no confidence, a day after she said she intends to leave the college.

Hart, who has been president for six years, declined further comment after the vote, saying she had not yet talked to the Faculty Council to hear specifics.

Faculty members said they do not trust Hart and question changes she made to her administrative team, including $34,000 in raises.

Jim Johnson, a faculty member in auto body repair, said Hart's decision to put more money in administration without considering faculty members' views contributed to the no-confidence vote.

"It seems wrong right now in light of budget constraints," Johnson said.

Hart said the changes were made because administrators were given more responsibilities.

Johnson said the promotions and raises should be rescinded. He said faculty members have questioned Hart's leadership in other areas as well.

"Nobody was happy about what was going on today, but it had to be done," Johnson said of Thursday's vote.

In 2002, the same faculty group rejected, 58-41, a vote of no confidence for Hart.

The Faculty Council unanimously decided to take the vote of no confidence by secret ballot. Some faculty members spoke during the meeting about a fear of retaliation.

Nine faculty members abstained from the vote. Some at the meeting are new to the college.
