KENMARE (AP) - Mayor Roger Ness says a new city ban on some dog breeds is in response to fears of potentially vicious dogs, and he expects opposition.

The Kenmare City Council voted April 14 to ban American Staffordshire terriers, Rottweilers and Doberman pinschers and any mixture of those breeds in the town of about 1,000. People who have those breeds have 10 days to remove them from town.

Ness said the ordinance affects only a few dogs in Kenmare, but opponents have been vocal and he expects them to be at the next council meeting in May.

No one has been bitten by a vicious dog, but residents feel threatened by dogs that have come into the city in the last couple of months, the mayor said.

"It's been a problem. We wanted to get it solved before anything did happen," Ness said.

Kenmare had banned pit bulls earlier. Ness said people were licensing dogs under other breed names the city felt were very similar to pit bulls.

Police Chief Gary Kraft said owners who don't remove prohibited dogs in 10 days will be fined. The fine starts at $100 for a first offense and increases to $500 for a third offense.

The ordinance does not allow the city to confiscate a dog, although Kraft said the council may decide to do that.
