MINOT - A burglary suspect was arrested by a 70-year-old hobby shop owner who fired gunshots and apprehended the man with help from his son, police said.
Justin Schlehr, 22, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., was charged on Friday with burglary. Judge Douglas Mattson set Schlehr's bond at $2,500 cash or surety.
Lt. Jason Olson said police were called just before midnight Thursday to the Aeroport Hobby Shop by the owner's son, Randy Lucke, 47, who told police he and his father, Stewart, had the suspect in custody.
Police said Schlehr was treated for an injury to his arm, then taken to jail.
Detective Jay Laudenschlager said Stewart Lucke fired several shots while apprehending the suspect before police got there, but no one was hurt as a result of the gunfire.
"He was adamant that they were warning shots to keep the suspect from fleeing until we got there," Laudenschlager said. "He was trying to protect his property - this was not the first time he had been burglarized."
A preliminary hearing for Schlehr has been set for Jan. 18.
