VALLEY CITY (AP) - A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison and a woman has been sentenced to three years for the death of a 14-month-old boy who authorities said was starved and dehydrated while living with the couple.

James Lee Thompson, 27, and Cassandra Riediger, 19, were charged in the death of Thompson's son, Marcus.

Thompson had pleaded guilty in March to a charge of abuse or neglect of a child and Riediger entered an Alford plea to a negligent homicide charge. The Alford plea means she did not admit wrongdoing but acknowledged a jury could find her guilty.

At the sentencing Tuesday, Judge Mikal Simonson ordered Thompson and Riediger to register as offenders of children.

Marcus Thompson was found dead last Sept. 15, after his father called 911 to report the boy was not breathing, authorities said. An autopsy showed the child died of chronic starvation and dehydration and weighed about 131/2 pounds, court papers said.
