JAMESTOWN - This city is testing a high-tech larvae zapper to fight mosquitoes.
Steve Reidburn, Jamestown's mosquito control director, said the machine will kill mosquito larvae within a 15-foot radius. It can be used in standing water.
"It's a prototype, and we're the first ones to get it," Reidburn said. "They (Centers for Disease Control) sold it to us for about half price, $4,500. They will retail for about $9,000 to $10,000. It's supposed to be as effective as 30-day larvacide."
In exchange for the discount, Reidburn will research the machine.
Spraying begins when the number of female mosquitoes in traps averages 125, he said. He has yet to decide exactly where the machine will be used.
