FARGO (AP) - North Dakota State University student leaders have endorsed limits on campus smoking.
The policy approved by the student government Sunday night would prohibit smoking within 50 feet of doorways. The group rejected the policy two weeks ago, but senators brought it back for reconsideration.
It now goes to NDSU President Joseph Chapman.
Student body president Josh Reimnitz said a committee would discuss when the new policy would take effect, possibly in July or in the fall.
Support for it was split, although the student government did not take a roll call vote to determine how many voted against it.
NDSU student senator Wyatt Brossart said the restrictions are unenforceable and violate smokers' rights. Others asked how students would determine a distance of 50 feet.
Student senator Joe Heilman said the 50-foot rule is to make it clear to people that smoking is not tolerated near doors and entrances.
Reimnitz said some student senators are drafting a proposal for a campus-wide tobacco ban.
A campus-wide smoking ban at Minnesota State University Moorhead started in January. A similar policy took effect at the University of North Dakota last fall.
