A second man is awaiting sentencing in a scheme involving a glue-covered weight lowered into a mail box to fish out money, federal prosecutors say.

Authorities said Joseph Minnifield, 27, of Minot, lowered the weight into at least one mail collection box to pull out mail containing checks and money orders, while Charles Price, 22, of Minot, kept watch.

The U.S. attorney's office said a search of Minnifield's home turned up two weapons along with ammunition, drug paraphernalia and material used to remove names from checks and money orders retrieved from the mail.

Minnifield pleaded guilty to conspiracy and weapons charges, the U.S. attorney's office said Tuesday. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 31.

Price is to be sentenced June 18 for mail theft. Authorities said he bought a 21/2-pound weight and a shoestring last fall for the scheme, which was uncovered when a postal carrier found the weight.
