An opportunity to experience a taste of what the Lewis and Clark Expedition went through, including a night of winter camping, is scheduled for Feb. 11 and 12 at Fort Mandan near Washburn.

During the weekend adventure put on by the Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation, winter survival skills will be taught by Voyager Outward Bound, a Minnesota survivalist company that also will provide the tents and sleeping gear for those participating.

In addition to demonstrations and activities in and around Fort Mandan and the Knife River Indian Villages, portions of the weekend events will take place inside the Headwaters Fort Mandan Visitor Center.

Cost for the weekend adventure is $125 for foundation members or $150 for non-members and includes meals, transportation between the sites, overnight camping gear and a commemorative T-shirt. The package also includes visits to Fort Mandan, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and the Knife River Indian Villages at Stanton.

One meal features American Indian foods: Buffalo, corn, beans, cornballs, juneberry pudding and fry bread.

Re-enactors and history experts from here and Idaho will give presentations and portray Toussaint Charbonneau and Sakakawea.
