DEVILS LAKE (AP) - A woman who died in a weekend stabbing incident was identified Tuesday as a longtime teacher at the North Dakota School for the Deaf.
The body of Paula Hartze, 43, was found in her home Sunday. Police said she might have been killed the day before. Authorities are treating the death as a homicide.
Hartze was an English teacher at the School for the Deaf the past 13 years, Superintendent Dennis Fogelson said.
"She was a very beloved teacher. We are going to miss her. It is a tragedy and we are trying to cope with it right now," Fogelson said.
Police Chief Bruce Kemmet said Tuesday that the investigation into Hartze's death was continuing. He would not comment on any possible suspects.
Police said earlier that Hartze died as a result of stab wounds to the torso. There were no signs of forced entry to her home, and officers said they do not believe the public is at risk.
The School for the Deaf planned a memorial service in honor of Hartze at 1 p.m. Thursday in the school's gymnasium, Fogelson said.
"It's been a very difficult time for all of us," he said. "Everyone is still in shock."
