DEVILS LAKE (AP) - North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan says Congress is expected to approve the final piece of funding for a new water source for the city of Devils Lake.
Dorgan says the last $1.6 million is in an energy and water bill that should be approved soon, so it can be signed shortly after the Obama administration takes office in January.
The project includes new wells, new transmission line and a new treatment plant. The federal government is paying more than half of the $18 million cost. The state is providing about $4.5 million, with the rest to come from increased water rates.
Six miles of Devils Lake's existing water line from a different aquifer is under the flooded lake of the same name. The city also needs to meet federal standards for arsenic in its drinking water.
